The article is dedicated to the history of creation and mechanisms of hypoglycemic action of metformin (Siofor). The data for the metformin administration to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus, its impact on the risk factors for cardiovascular disease are presented. The possibilities of using metformin treatment outside of type 2 diabetes (atherosclerosis, nonalcoholic steatosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome) are discussed. We consider the side effects associated with the use of metformin.
